Hello all -
I have inherited a Microsoft Domain that is at a Windows 2003 forest and domain functional level. The level cannot be raised at this time because of a home grown line of business app that will not play nice with the added functionality of a Windows 2008 domain.
In this domain the DCs are Windows 2008r2 and there is a mix of 2003 to 2012r2 member servers.
I am getting ready to redo our Certificate Authority as it was not set up correctly. I want to use Windows 2012 R2 servers to do this so I dont have to upgrade the servers for some time to come. The Forest/Domain functional level should be raised sometime in 2014 to at least 2008r2.
Now the question.
Will there be any issues when I extend the schema and will I be able to leverage the new capabilities of the 2012 r2 cert server after I raise the functional level?
Should I make the cert server a 2008r2 instead of a 2012r2 as we already have DCs that are 2008r2 even though they can’t use all of their functionality right now?
Thanks for the help in advance –
