How to use the same server name as an existing server on the network?

Hi,
  • I have a server called A
  • I also have a secondary server called B
  • I have updated a clients hosts file so that A points to the same IP as B has.

So, I want to reach server B by by type \\A in Windows Explorer on the client. This obviously causes a security issue when the request lands on B since when it does a security check it realizes it's not actually server A and server A already exists in the domain. The client does reach server B but authentication fails and I want to temporarily disable the servers (B) security check.

Kerberos error:

The kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server host/B.  The target name used was cifs/A. This indicates that the password used to encrypt the kerberos service ticket is different than that on the target server. Commonly, this is due to identically named  machine accounts in the target realm (y.x.NET), and the client realm.   Please contact your system administrator.

I have tried Method 2 in the following article without success: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks
